Tridecanoic acid

Description:
Tridecanoic acid, also known as tridecylic acid, is a straight-chain saturated fatty acid with the chemical formula C13H26O2. It is characterized by a long hydrophobic hydrocarbon tail, consisting of thirteen carbon atoms, and a carboxylic acid functional group (-COOH) at one end. This structure imparts both hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties, making tridecanoic acid amphiphilic. It is typically a white, waxy solid at room temperature and has a relatively high melting point compared to shorter-chain fatty acids. Tridecanoic acid is found in various natural fats and oils, particularly in some animal fats and plant oils. It is used in the production of surfactants, lubricants, and as a flavoring agent in the food industry. Additionally, it has applications in the synthesis of esters and other chemical derivatives. Due to its long carbon chain, tridecanoic acid is less soluble in water but soluble in organic solvents, which is a common characteristic of fatty acids.
