It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cryptococcus neoformans and Clostridium perfringens, two human pathogens. 2-Methylphenylacetic acid also reacts with chloride or sodium carbonate under basic conditions to form a nucleophilic attack on the fatty acid formyl group. This reaction leads to the formation of an enolate, which can react with a halide in a nucleophilic substitution reaction.
