Trichlorofluoromethane

Description:
Trichlorofluoromethane, commonly known as CFC-11, is a colorless, odorless gas at room temperature and is part of the chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) family. Its chemical formula is CCl3F, and it is characterized by its high stability and low reactivity, which makes it useful in various applications, particularly as a refrigerant and aerosol propellant. CFC-11 has a relatively low boiling point, allowing it to easily transition from liquid to gas, which is advantageous in refrigeration systems. However, it is also known for its ozone-depleting potential, as it can release chlorine atoms in the stratosphere, leading to the degradation of the ozone layer. Due to its environmental impact, the production and use of trichlorofluoromethane have been largely phased out under the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty aimed at protecting the ozone layer. In terms of safety, it is considered to have low acute toxicity, but prolonged exposure may pose health risks, including potential effects on the central nervous system.
