Description:
Dichlorodifluoromethane, commonly known as CFC-12 or Freon-12, is a colorless, odorless gas at room temperature and pressure. It belongs to the class of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and has the chemical formula CCl2F2. This compound is characterized by its low boiling point, making it useful as a refrigerant and propellant in aerosol applications. It is non-flammable and has a relatively low toxicity, which contributed to its widespread use in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. However, dichlorodifluoromethane is known to have significant ozone-depleting potential, leading to its phase-out under the Montreal Protocol.
