It can be used to prevent and treat proliferative diabetic retinopathy, which is a complication of diabetes. P-hydroxyhippuryl-His-Leu-OH increases the glomerular filtration rate and decreases the ventricular mass index, which may be due to its ability to inhibit angiotensin II receptors in the brain. P-hydroxyhippuryl-His-Leu-OH also inhibits angiotensin converting enzyme, an enzyme that converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II.
