:Aztreonam
Description:
Aztreonam is a synthetic monobactam antibiotic primarily used to treat infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. It is characterized by its beta-lactam structure, which is essential for its antibacterial activity. Aztreonam is particularly effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Enterobacteriaceae, making it a valuable option for patients with penicillin allergies, as it has a low cross-reactivity with penicillins. The compound is typically administered intravenously or intramuscularly, as it is not well absorbed when taken orally. Aztreonam exhibits a unique mechanism of action by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. Its stability against certain beta-lactamases, enzymes produced by bacteria to confer resistance, enhances its efficacy in treating resistant infections. Additionally, aztreonam has a favorable pharmacokinetic profile, with a relatively short half-life and good tissue penetration, allowing for effective treatment of various infections. However, like all antibiotics, it may cause side effects, including gastrointestinal disturbances and potential allergic reactions.
