2,4,6-Trimethylaniline

Description:
2,4,6-Trimethylaniline, with the CAS number 88-05-1, is an organic compound belonging to the class of anilines, which are aromatic amines. It features a benzene ring substituted with three methyl groups at the 2, 4, and 6 positions and an amino group (-NH2) at the 1-position. This compound is typically a colorless to pale yellow liquid or solid, depending on the temperature, and has a characteristic amine odor. It is soluble in organic solvents but has limited solubility in water due to its hydrophobic methyl groups. 2,4,6-Trimethylaniline is primarily used in the production of dyes, pigments, and as an intermediate in the synthesis of various chemicals. It exhibits basic properties due to the presence of the amino group, allowing it to participate in various chemical reactions, including electrophilic aromatic substitution. However, it is important to handle this compound with care, as it may pose health risks, including skin and respiratory irritation, and is considered hazardous to the environment.
