CAS 99-66-1
:Valproic acid
Description:
Valproic acid, with the CAS number 99-66-1, is a branched-chain fatty acid that serves primarily as an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug. It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic odor and is soluble in water, alcohol, and ether. The molecular formula of valproic acid is C8H16O2, and it has a molecular weight of approximately 144.22 g/mol. Valproic acid is known for its ability to increase the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, which helps to stabilize neuronal activity and reduce seizure frequency. It is commonly used in the treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and to prevent migraine headaches. The substance has a relatively low toxicity profile, but it can cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, weight gain, and, in rare cases, hepatotoxicity. Due to its effects on the central nervous system, valproic acid should be used with caution, particularly in individuals with liver disease or those who are pregnant.
