It has been demonstrated to be an inhibitor of tumor cells, in particular leishmania and plasmodium. The leaves of the plant from which 5-hydroxynicotinamide is derived are used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of fever, malaria, and other diseases. The structure of 5-hydroxynicotinamide was determined by spectroscopic data and chemical analysis. Hypoxic tumor cells were found to be more susceptible than normoxic tumor cells to the antitumor activity of 5-hydroxynicotinamide. Methyl 2,4-dichloro-5-nitrobenzoate fuses with proteins in the insect’s gut and prevents them from digesting food. This causes a rapid death by starvation of insects that have ingested this compound. The infrared spectrum of methyl 2,4-dichloro-5-nitrobenzoate has been shown to be similar to that of propoxur and methamidophos.
