CAS:3-(Trifluoromethyl)-5H,6H,7H,8H-imidazo[1,5-a]pyrazine is a maleate salt of the antidiabetic drug metformin. Metformin is a biguanide that inhibits the liver's production of glucose by decreasing the amount of glucose absorbed from food and increasing the amount of glucose released from stored glycogen in response to insulin. 3-(Trifluoromethyl)-5H,6H,7H,8H-imidazo[1,5-a]pyrazine has been shown to be active against both type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. It works by reducing insulin resistance. The mechanism of action is still unknown but it may involve an increase in AMP levels or activation of AMPK and other energy regulating kinases.
