H-Asp(Ala-OH)-OH has been shown to have neuroprotective effects against hypoxia, glutamate toxicity, and oxygen deprivation. This compound reverses the effects of oxidative stress in cultured cells and can also stimulate protein synthesis in cultured cells. The mechanism by which it works is not yet known but may involve inhibition of cysteine uptake into the cell or stimulation of protein synthesis by increasing intracellular levels of cAMP.
