It is an inhibitor of the enzyme phospholipase A2, which is responsible for the release of arachidonic acid from membrane phospholipids. 3-Phenylpropionamide also blocks the interaction of κ subtype opioid receptors with their ligands and inhibits choroidal neovascularization in animal models. This drug has been shown to be toxic in animals, with adverse effects on metabolic disorders such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels.
