Kainic acid is a basic protein that has been shown to have pharmacological activity. It is the prototypical agonist for the ionotropic glutamate receptor, which stimulates neuronal death and cell nuclei. Kainic acid has been used in vitro to study brain functions, as well as being used experimentally in biological studies. Kainic acid is also an agonist at the GABAA receptor, inhibiting its function and causing sedation. It also binds to the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, which mediates excitatory neurotransmission and neuronal plasticity. Kainic acid has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the wild-type strain of kainate receptors in vitro.
