Diethyl sulfite is a chemical compound that is used as an analytical reagent in organic chemistry. It reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce sulfur dioxide gas and water vapor, which are both colorless. The frequency of the hydrogen bond between diethyl sulfite and hydrochloric acid can be determined by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The thermal expansion of diethyl sulfite is greater than that of water at temperatures above 100°C. Diethyl sulfite is also soluble in lithium and reacts with hydrogen fluoride to produce lithium sulfate and hydrogen gas. This reaction mechanism has been shown to be reversible when solid catalysts such as palladium, nickel, or platinum are used.
