Bacitracin is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of aminoglycosides. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which can inhibit bacterial growth by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting protein synthesis. Bacitracin has been shown to have a hypoglycemic effect in mice, which may be due to its up-regulation of glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β) in liver cells. This antibiotic has been used as a control for transfection experiments and analytical methods, as well as biological studies on vancomycin therapy and tetracycline resistance. Bacitracin has been shown to affect the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method by inhibiting DNA polymerase activity.
