Enduracidin is an antimicrobial peptide that is active against a variety of bacteria and fungi. It has been shown to be effective at concentrations as low as 0.01 μg/mL, with optimum concentration of 0.1 μg/mL. Enduracidin inhibits the activity of bacterial enzymes such as protocatechuic acid, trifluoroacetic acid, and enramycin, which are involved in the synthesis of fatty acids and amino acids. The wild-type strain was sensitive to enduracidin, but resistant mutants were generated by exposure to sublethal concentrations of antibiotics or exposure to whole-genome sequencing (WGS). These resistant mutants have mutations in genes encoding for proteins that are involved in fatty acid synthesis and membrane transport. The monoclonal antibody recognizes these mutated proteins on the surface of cells and triggers an immune response that leads to cell death by apoptosis.
