Ethambutol is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the synthesis of mycolic acids, which are major lipids in the cell wall of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Ethambutol is used to treat tuberculosis by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. It works by binding to the beta-subunit of bacterial DNA polymerase and prevents transcription and replication. The x-ray crystal structures show that ethambutol binds to a site on the beta-subunit of DNA polymerase that is different from other antibiotics, such as rifampin, and this may account for its lower toxicity. Ethambutol has been shown to have few drug interactions with other drugs. There are no reports of resistance developing against ethambutol in vitro or in vivo. There are also no reports of serious side effects associated with treatment with ethambutol.
This drug is currently being studied as a possible treatment for people with latent MDR-TB infection who have failed previous treatments
