Scutellaria is a genus of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of various ailments, including fever, pain, and inflammation. A natural product obtained from Scutellaria baicalensis (Baikal skullcap) was found to be effective against human leukemia cells. The active compound is 2',4'-dihydroxy-2,3',6'-trimethoxychalcone (DHTMCHC), which inhibits protein synthesis and induces apoptosis in cancer cells by inhibiting DNA synthesis and causing DNA fragmentation. DHTMCHC also suppresses tumor growth by inhibiting angiogenesis.
