- 1-Ethyl-4-Isobutylbenzene
1-Ethyl-4-isobutylbenzene is a mixture of two isomers, the E and Z isomers. The two isomers are produced in equal amounts by the dehydrogenation of 1-ethyl-3-methylbenzene. This reaction can be catalyzed by acid and occurs more rapidly at higher temperatures. The reaction rate for the E isomer is greater than that for the Z isomer.
The two isomers can be separated using a number of methods including gas chromatography or liquid chromatography. In this experiment, we will use gas chromatography to separate the products from a reaction time of 30 minutes. The efficiency of this method was determined to be about 98%.
