Azumolene is a potent in vitro agent that increases intracellular Ca2+ levels. It has been shown to be a potent inducers of sarcoplasmic Ca2+ release and is active against cardiac tissue. Azumolene has been used as an analytical tool to measure the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration of cells, tissues, and organs. Azumolene binds to the ryanodine receptor and induces the release of calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum. The fatty acid moiety of azumolene may be responsible for its effects on cellular function. Azumolene is also a detergent composition that can be used for cleaning surgical instruments or other equipment without damaging them.
