The mechanistic study of this reaction has demonstrated that this process proceeds by a catalytic cycle in which an acetylide reacts with a bromonium ion to form an intermediate cationic complex. This intermediate then reacts with an alkyl halide, generating the desired coupling product and regenerating the catalyst. The product of this reaction is obtained in high selectivity because this process does not require any protecting group manipulations, thus avoiding the formation of undesired side products.
