S7958 is a novel analog of the natural hormone erythropoietin (EPO). It is a recombinant protein that has been modified to reduce its immunogenicity. S7958 binds to EPO receptors on the surface of red blood cells, causing them to release oxygen more efficiently. This drug has been shown to have a clastogenic effect in humans and subchronic toxicity in rats and mice. The drug has been approved for use in Japan and Korea as an oral treatment for anemia. Approval by regulatory authorities is pending.
