It is a phosphorylated aminothiol prodrug derived from chemical synthesis. Its mode of action involves dephosphorylation to its active metabolite, WR-1065, by alkaline phosphatase enzymes present in normal tissues. This active form then scavenges free radicals and enhances DNA repair mechanisms, providing selective protection to normal tissues during chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
