AtractylenolideIII is a natural compound that belongs to the class of sesquiterpene lactones. It has been shown to have antiinflammatory activity and significant cytotoxicity in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and HL-60 cells. AtractylenolideIII inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the activation of ATP synthase and reduce cellular energy levels. This drug also inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by inhibiting nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) into ROS. AtractylenolideIII also induces apoptosis through inhibition of signal pathways, including p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt, nuclear factor k
