AtractylenolideI is a bioactive compound found in the Chinese herb Etoac. It has significant cytotoxicity against HL-60 cells and induces apoptosis in these cells. The apoptosis pathway is initiated by atractylenolide binding to DNA response elements, which leads to the activation of transcription factors that initiate the synthesis of proteins that induce cell death. AtractylenolideI also has anti-inflammatory properties. This activity is synergistic with other compounds such as indomethacin, which have been shown to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. AtractylenolideI has also been shown to inhibit toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathways in colon epithelial cells, which may be useful for bowel diseases.
