Bis(p-tolyl)phosphineoxide is a hydrogen bond donor. It reacts readily with amines to form phosphoramides and phosphonates. Bis(p-tolyl)phosphineoxide can be used as a ligand in some catalytic reactions, such as the formation of primary amines from aldehydes. The product of this reaction is hydrogen peroxide, which may react with oxygen to form water and superoxides. This chemical has been shown to be biologically active and reactive at the reactive site through irradiation.
