2-Chloro-5-hydroxypyridine is a chemical that binds to the acetylcholine receptor, which is a protein on the surface of cells. 2-Chloro-5-hydroxypyridine has been shown to have antinociceptive properties in animals and may be effective in relieving pain. This chemical is also an inhibitor of enzyme activity, including aminopeptidase, carboxypeptidase, and dipeptidase. 2-Chloro-5-hydroxypyridine has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by binding to the α subunit of protein kinase C (PKC). The gene product for PKCα is histidine rich and can be synthesized chemically. 2-Chloro-5-hydroxypyridine also inhibits glutamate release from nerve terminals by blocking NMDA receptors.
