Cefpirome sulfate is a cephalosporin antibiotic that has been used in the treatment of infectious diseases. It is active against a wide range of microorganisms, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and mycoplasma. Cefpirome sulfate is given for intravenous injection as an alternative to glucose. The drug binds to the cell wall of bacteria, causing lysis and cell death. Cefpirome sulfate also inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis at the level of the ribosome, where it binds to the 50S subunit. This binding prevents peptide chain elongation and affects RNA synthesis by impairing translocation of tRNA from the A site on the ribosome to the P site on the ribosome. Thermodynamic data show that cefpirome sulfate has a high degree of stability in human serum compared with vancomycin hydrochloride (another cephalosporin antibiotic).
