Description:Dcpib is a small molecule that is structurally related to the neurotransmitter dopamine and has been shown to have neuroprotective effects in vitro. Dcpib increases neuronal survival following oxidative stress and blocks the cellular changes associated with neuronal death, such as mitochondrial membrane potential collapse and channel opening. It also prevents the release of glutamate, which leads to neuronal death by activating NMDA receptors. Dcpib has been shown to inhibit ATP binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1), which is a drug target for cholesterol-lowering drugs. The pharmacological activity of dcpib may be due to its ability to inhibit ABCA1 function and increase the level of cytosolic Ca2+.
