It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor and can be used as a solvent and in the manufacture of other compounds such as dibenzoylmethane. 2,3-Dimethyl-1H-indol-7-amine reacts with acetylacetone to form acetoacetic acid, which is then catalyzed by alcohol dehydrogenase to form oxaloacetate. This reaction also produces acetoacetate, which is oxidized by the enzyme dibenzoylmethane to form benzaldehyde.
