Dexamethasone 9,11-epoxide is an oxidative metabolite of the corticosteroid dexamethasone. It is produced by autooxidation of dexamethasone with molecular oxygen and has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth in experiments. Dexamethasone 9,11-epoxide (DEXO) has a molecular weight of 298.4 daltons and an epoxide group at C-9 and C-11. The oxidation process occurs at the 9th or 11th position on the steroid ring system and produces different metabolites depending on which position is oxidized.
DEXO inhibits bacterial growth in vitro by binding to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. DEXO also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to nuclear receptors that regulate gene transcription through their interaction with DNA sequences near the promoter region of genes regulated by hormones.>END>>
