Dyphylline is a pharmaceutical drug that is used to treat asthma and chronic pulmonary obstructive disease. It is also used as a bronchodilator to relieve the symptoms of asthma and other respiratory disorders by relaxing the air passages. Dyphylline works by increasing the availability of oxygen to the lungs, which helps to relax the muscles around the airways. This leads to an increase in airflow into and out of the lungs. The drug inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting chemotactic activity and hydroxyl group-dependent reactions, including protein synthesis. It also has potent antimicrobial activity against a wide range of microorganisms, including some strains of bacteria that are resistant to erythromycin and metoprolol succinate, which are two common antibiotics for treating respiratory infections. Dyphylline has been shown to have no effect on human serum albumin levels or on renal function (e.g., glomerular filtration rate).
