Epibetulinic acid is a natural compound that belongs to the class of triterpene alcohols. It has been shown to have potent activity against cancer cells in vitro and also displays cytostatic activity in human liver cells. Epibetulinic acid inhibits the growth of Rhizomatis, a fungus that causes skin lesions, by inhibiting protein synthesis. This compound has been found to be active in vitro against the fungus Candida albicans, which is commonly found on the skin and mucous membranes of humans. It has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in Candida albicans at concentrations of 1 microM or less.
Methanolic extracts of maytenus (a plant) were found to contain epibetulinic acid, as well as oleanonic acid and other fatty acids. These compounds have been shown to inhibit cell proliferation.
