Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone that regulates the production of red blood cells. EPO binds to erythropoietin receptors on the surface of red blood cells and stimulates the production of hemoglobin, which facilitates oxygen transport by reversibly binding to iron in the cytoplasm. The receptor activity of EPO is mediated by its association with the IL-2 receptor, which has been shown to be involved in a variety of cellular functions including mitochondrial membrane potential, oxidative injury, and neuronal death. EPO has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in vivo, as well as anti-fibrotic effects in kidney fibrosis due to its ability to inhibit angiogenesis.
