Description

Rosuvastatin is a member of the statin drug class and is used to lower cholesterol. It is a prodrug, metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes to its active form, rosuvastatin. Rosuvastatin has been shown to have low potency with respect to inhibiting human hepatic HMG-CoA reductase activity. This may be due to its ability to bind less tightly than other statins (e.g., atorvastatin) to the active site of this enzyme, which may be due to its bulky side-chain group. Rosuvastatin also has anti-inflammatory properties that are not shared by other statins and may be responsible for some of the side-effects associated with this drug.
