Description:

Droperidol is a dopamine receptor blocker and an antiemetic agent. It has been shown to be effective in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting following abdominal surgery, as well as in the treatment of nausea and vomiting caused by motion sickness, cancer chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. One study found that droperidol was more effective than lorazepam in preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting after abdominal surgery. This drug also has been shown to have cardiotoxic effects when used at high doses. Droperidol is a non-selective antagonist of dopamine receptors (D1-D5), which blocks the action of endogenous dopamine on the central nervous system. The clinical relevance of this receptor blocking effect is not yet known. Droperidol also blocks gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, which may partially explain its sedative properties. The mechanism by which droperidol causes lymphocyte transformation is unknown, but it may be due to
