Famotidine is a selective histamine H2-receptor antagonist used in the treatment of gastric hypersecretory disorders. Famotidine is effective in the treatment of duodenal and gastric ulcers, particularly when they are caused by the prolonged use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). To improve retention in the stomach, famotidine has experimentally been formulated as buoyant tablets that remained floating for up to 10 hours in vitro (Jaimini, 2007).
