Glucostrophanthidin is a cardiac glycoside that has been shown to have cytotoxic, cardiotonic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is found in the plant Erysimin (Erysimum cheiri). It binds to the beta-adrenergic receptor on the surface of cells, activating adenylate cyclase. This leads to an increase in intracellular cAMP levels. Glucostrophanthidin also inhibits G protein signaling by binding to the alpha subunit of G proteins. The inhibition of this signaling pathway leads to an increase in intracellular calcium levels and subsequent activation of phospholipase C. These events lead to increased levels of inositol triphosphate and diacylglycerol, which activate protein kinase C and thereby inhibit cell proliferation.
