Description:

Hexamethylphosphoramide (HMP) is a glycol ether that is used as a solvent in the manufacture of plastics and rubber, and as a fire extinguishing agent. It has been shown to have an effect on the gland cells of rats, causing an increase in the number of cells and an increase in the size of their nuclei. HMP also has a thermal expansion coefficient that is higher than that of water. The protonation potential for HMP is greater than that for water, which may be due to the intramolecular hydrogen bond between the two methyl groups. Chronic oral exposure to hexamethylphosphoramide can cause squamous cell carcinoma in rats. Titration calorimetry shows that hexamethylphosphoramide reacts with trifluoroacetic acid according to a reaction mechanism involving transfer reactions. Hexamethylphosphoramide has been shown to have effects on autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's disease and multiple sclerosis
