4-Hydroxy carbazole is a chemical compound that binds to toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) and TLR4. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in mouse skin, as well as cervical cancer cells in human tissue culture. The molecule was also found to be an effective inhibitor for bacterial strains resistant to other antibiotics. 4-Hydroxy carbazole interacts with the bacterial DNA polymerase, preventing the enzyme from completing DNA synthesis. This process may result in cell death through apoptosis or necrosis. The molecule also inhibits the activity of uvb-induced enzymes, such as cytochrome P450s, which are required for activation of carcinogens and detoxification of reactive oxygen species. 4-Hydroxy carbazole binds covalently with proteins through amide linkage, leading to a stable complex that is not readily excreted by the kidney or liver. This property makes it useful for detecting proteinuria or early detection of bladder cancer
