5-Hydroxy-5-methylhydantoin (5HMH) is a glycosylase that is used to repair damaged DNA. It reacts with the hydroxyl group of 5-methylcytosine and removes it, yielding thymine. The reaction proceeds through a nucleophilic attack on the carbon atom adjacent to the C5 methyl group. This reaction is dependent on neutral pH, uv absorption, and has been shown in vitro to be inhibited by the presence of oxidizing agents. 5HMH has been shown to remove UVB-induced damage from DNA in mammalian cells, which may lead to cancer.
