The optical properties are: an extinction coefficient ε = 24700 M−1 cm−1, λmax = 318 nm, and λmax = 681 nm. 4HB is optically active with the dipole moment μ = 0.7 D and has an asymmetric hydrogen bond between the alkylthio group and hydroxy group, which gives it chemical stability against heat and light.
