2-Hydroxy-4-nitrobenzoic acid is a colorless crystalline compound. It is soluble in water and has a constant boiling point. 2-Hydroxy-4-nitrobenzoic acid can be used to make 2,4-dinitrophenylhydroxamic acid and 4,6-dichloroquinoxaline. The thermodynamic properties of this compound have been studied using the diethyl ester as a reactant. This reaction was efficient and the product formed was mostly 2,4,6-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid. A new method for making 2,4,6-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid has been found that uses nitric and hydrochloric acids to produce 2-hydroxy-4 nitrobenzoic acid as an intermediate. This method also produces less waste than the traditional method of making this chemical.
