Hydroxygenkwanin is an anti-cancer drug that belongs to the group of natural compounds. It has been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells by altering mitochondrial membrane potential and inhibiting protein synthesis through the inhibition of multiple enzymes, including ester hydrochloride hydrolase, cytochrome P450s, and protein kinases. Hydroxygenkwanin has also been found to have a matrix effect on cancer cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit growth factors and cell adhesion molecules. This compound also inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species in rat liver microsomes. Hydroxygenkwanin is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes, mainly CYP3A4. The ETOAC extract from rhizoma Gastrodiae has been shown to alter the pharmacokinetic properties of this drug.
