The p-Menthane-1,8-diol monohydrate is a film-forming polymer that has been used in the preparation of pharmaceutical preparations. The hydroxyl group on the molecule is responsible for its ability to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, which results in a film that can be used as an adhesive or coating. It also has been shown to have some anti-inflammatory effects and may be useful in treatment of chronic bronchitis. This compound may also be used as a natural compound to treat infectious diseases because it has the ability to inhibit protein synthesis. The reaction mechanism for this compound includes an acid complex with copper chloride, which leads to an uptake into organisms, and then alcohol residue is removed by esterases with fatty acids.
