Manidipine dihydrochloride is a calcium channel blocker used to control blood pressure. It is administered orally and has been shown to be effective in controlling blood pressure in humans. Manidipine dihydrochloride decreases the uptake of sodium ions into cells, which leads to decreased water retention and decreased production of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes vasoconstriction. The hydrogen chloride (HCl) extraction process can be used for the isolation of manidipine from the raw material. The stereoselective process can be used for separation of manidipine from its racemic mixture. This drug is not absorbed by the intestinal tract and must be administered by injection or intravenously.
