Melicopicene is a natural compound that belongs to the class of acridones. It has been shown to have cytotoxic effects against cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, as well as anti-inflammatory activities. Melicopicene has also been shown to inhibit the growth of cervical cancer cells by inducing apoptosis. The chemical structure of melicopicene includes a hydroxyl group at position C4 and a hydrochloride group at position C3, which are important for its biological properties. Melicopicene is metabolized through oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes or glucuronidases, reduction by glutathione reductase, or conjugation with glucuronic acid. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) studies have enabled the detection of melicopicine in human plasma after oral administration of melicopicene sodium carbonate (MSC), which was used as an excipient in a clinical trial for advanced solid tumours.
