4-Nitrochalcone is a natural compound that has been found to be effective in the treatment of leukemia. It is synthesized from 2-hydroxybenzoic acid and nitric acid. 4-Nitrochalcone reacts with maleic anhydride to form a mixture of 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid and 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid. This reaction occurs in a reaction vessel at 220 degrees Celsius. The mixed product is then hydrolyzed by hydrochloric acid to release the 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid and 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid. The nitro group on the 3,5-dihydroxylbenzoic acid leaves as nitrous oxide gas during this process. The 3,5-dihydroxylbenzoic acids are potent inhibitors of mitochondrial membrane potential and can thus inhibit cell respiration. Nitro groups
