5-Nitro-2-picolinic acid is a picolinic acid derivative that has been found in urine samples of patients with Alzheimer's disease. The crystallographic data and the analysis of the diffraction parameters have shown that 5-Nitro-2-picolinic acid is the oxidised form of picolinic acid, which is an aminoadipate carboxylate. This compound has been found to be taken up by cells and is linked to nitric oxide, suggesting that it may play a role in the development of Alzheimer's disease. 5-Nitro-2-picolinic acid displays some biological properties that are similar to those of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA).
