Noreugenin is a natural phenolic compound found in plants of the genus "Rutaceae". It has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against a number of cancer cell lines. Noreugenin inhibits the growth of oral pathogens, such as Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Noreugenin has been shown to have bactericidal and antiviral activity against Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and poliovirus type 1 (PV-1). The mechanism of action is not well understood, but it is thought that noreugenin may interfere with viral DNA replication or protein synthesis.
